Firewood FAQ

What is seasoned firewood? Expand

Seasoned firewood is wood that has been air dried outside after being cut and split. On average, it takes about 6-9 months for the wood to be seasoned to perfection. Our wood is all sourced locally, split onsite and store outdoors, it is not kiln dried.

When is the best time to buy wood? Expand

Spring and summer so it can be stacked and have better airflow to fully dry out for ease of burning.

How should I store my firewood? Expand

Seasoned firewood should be stored off the ground on a rack or pallet and away from the walls of a building to allow air to flow around the wood. We DO NOT recommend stacking it on the ground. The top of the stack should be loosely covered to prevent it from getting soaking wet or icing over. Covering firewood with a tarp or stacking it under a lean-to should be sufficient. You can store firewood in a shed or basement, but you may be inviting insects and rodents into your living space. Being in an enclosed area will also slow down any drying that the wood may need to do.

How do I get a good fire started? Expand

First thing you want to do is start your fire with kindling and newspaper.

(We highly recommend investing in FatWood, it is a sap rich product that slow burns in order to get the logs lit more easily). You can fit it on www.plowhearth.com. Once you have a fire going, start to put smaller pieces of firewood on top. DO NOT start with big pieces of firewood. After you have a nice little fire going, you can add your bigger pieces of wood.

Where to locate my firewood for seasoning and storing to reduce access to pests? Expand

Wood that has been stored outside and has not been kiln-dried, is a great home for many insects. By stacking wood like this inside or directly against your home, you’re inviting those insects to take up residence with you. Termites, cockroaches, ants, beetles, and spiders are all common hitchhikers on firewood. Where there are insects, there are often rodents and where there are rodents there are often snakes. If you don’t want these animals in or near your home, you’ll need to find a suitable place to stack your firewood that is accessible, but far enough away from your home that they stay outside.

How long does it take until wet firewood is dry? Expand

If your properly stacked firewood got wet in a rain or snowstorm, it should only take a few hours or possibly a day or two to be completely dry again, in the right conditions. Placing wet wood near your wood furnace is a great way to ensure your firewood dries out as quickly as possible, and the normally dry air surrounding a stove or furnace would likely benefit from the addition of some damp logs. If you don’t need the wood in the next couple days, you can leave the wood in its outdoor storage and it’ll dry over the next week or two, naturally, in the sunshine as air circulates around the damp logs.

What is a ½ cord of firewood? Expand

Splitz delivers a loose thrown 1/2 cord. Which equates to about 90 cubic feet of space as is. When stacked it will roughly equal a 1/2 stacked cord of wood.

A “1/2 cord” of wood is a measure of volume that is equal to 64 cubic feet. This means that utilizing the typical 16” long firewood pieces, the wood, in stacked form, will measure 4 feet tall by 4 feet long (across) by 4 feet deep. While there may be some generalized average weights for a cord of firewood, the cord measurement is cubic feet volume measurement and does not equate to a weight measurement. The weight will vary greatly depending on wood species, moisture content of the wood, etc.

What is a cord of firewood? Expand

Splitz delivers a loose thrown cord. Which equates to about 180 cubic feet of space as is. When stacked it will roughly equal a stacked cord of wood.

A “cord” of wood is a measure of volume that is equal to 128 cubic feet. This means that utilizing the typical 16” long firewood pieces, the wood, in stacked form, will measure 4 feet tall by 8 feet long (across) by 4 feet deep. While there may be some generalized average weights for a cord of firewood, the cord measurement is cubic feet volume measurement and does not equate to a weight measurement. The weight will vary greatly depending on wood species, moisture content of the wood, etc.

What is the average length of your wood? Expand

Approximately 16 inches

Where should I stack my wood? Expand

We recommend stacking firewood on either a rack or pallet. We DO NOT recommend stacking it on the ground. Also bring inside as much wood as possible to dry.

What to expect when wood is delivered? Expand

Expect dirt and debris in the wood while stacking it. It is impossible to deliver spotless wood. The splintering and dirt is a result of the wood being rotated during the seasoning process.

Do I need to be home when delivery is made? Expand

No. The delivery can be arranged ahead of time, we just need to know where you want the wood dropped or the spot marked.

I have a pickup truck, can I come pick up wood? Expand

Sorry, but we are not offering pick up service at this time. Please give us a call or order online and we can deliver right to your door.

Will you buy/pickup/remove the tree that I had removed or fell down? Expand

No, we cannot rely on donations or buy our firewood and give our customers the best product possible.

In general, mid-to late spring is mulching season. That is when the soil is warming up from the freezing temperatures it experienced all winter. Doing it too early will slow down the warming process, which the soil needs to do its job.
